Wainwright was at his best in the second of his two sets, which were separated by Voigt’s cameo: in this set, unlike in the first, he sat at the piano and accompanied himself and the orchestra, and the whole thing came together in a way it hadn’t earlier on. After the dust had settled on his touching encore, however – Over the Rainbow, of course, with a digitised rainbow popping up on the LCD board behind the stage – it felt like the concert had missed a lot of opportunities. Well, a few things did, but overall Wainwright’s charm and the quality of his pop songs won out. Also: Deborah Voigt popped in for a couple of numbers. And this was also a showcase for the always impressive Britten Sinfonia, acting as a backing band in this set of mostly new orchestral arrangements, as well as rising-star conductor Johannes Debus. It’s an ideal match between the Proms’ generally classical-first ethos and the more laid-back atmosphere the late concerts foster. He’s a pop artist, yes, but a pop artist whose love of classical music (Romantic opera especially) informs almost everything about him, from his vibrato-heavy voice to his occasional quoting of Ravel’s Boléro. Was Rufus Wainwright made for the Proms? Quite possibly: he ticks all the boxes needed for the ideal late-night set. Whether it's true that I promote music sharing and it's free use over the Internet, I also want to promote funding the artists here. Videos are *not* from me or made by me, and so is their content. Most of them come from old and re-printed records that are most of the time cheaper than the fresh mainstream ones. ![]() Therefore, I post it here, sometimes, when I think it's needed.Įvery evening I post an original, edited, fan-like or artistic video of some sound that I really enjoyed and consider worth being listened to at least once during a normal life, filled and fueled by a minimal will of culture and learning.ĭon't forget that if you like the sounds posted here, you have to buy the original media: CDs, records, EPs, online music downloading, etc. William, born 1984, Web developer, kind of a musician when I have some lost and spare time, interested and involved in photograhy, digital picture editing, hi-fi and sounds in general, wherever they come from and whatever they sound like.Įverything that's linked for a reason or another to arts, new techs, or sound is something that I can absorb and share.
